LeafFilter was invented and patented in 1999 by Alex Higginbotham from Virginia. LeafFilter was the first commercially available micro mesh gutter guard on the market that marked the first advancement in the effectiveness of gutter protection systems in decades.

In 2010, Matt Kaulig, who was a dealer of LeafFilter purchased the rights to sell it nationwide. In the years since, through heavy online, print and TV advertising, LeafFilter has grown into the largest gutter protection in the world, eclipsing $1.4 billion in sales in 2021.

Prior to Kaulig purchasing the rights to sell LeafFilter, Higginbotham developed an improved micro mesh gutter guard called MasterShield in 2005. 

Both LeafFilter and MasterShield remain on the market today. 

Gutter Guards Direct offers several micro mesh gutter guards, including MasterShield and GutterLove. MasterShield was the top performer in the Ultimate Gutter Guard Challenge 2021.
